Guided Walking Tour Of Rye

Unearth the Secrets of Rye!

Ready to peel back the layers of Rye’s incredible history? Join our guided walk and discover all the tales you never knew about this fascinating town — from invaders and smugglers to ghostly goings‑on and famous faces.

Your 1½‑hour adventure begins at the Rye Heritage Centre, home of the Town Model Sound and Light Show — the perfect introduction before we hit the cobbles. From there, our guides lead you through Rye’s winding streets and ancient alleyways, sharing stories that stretch from before the Norman Conquest right up to the present day.

Rye hasn’t always been the peaceful, postcard‑perfect town you see today. Once a key Cinque Port, it has survived French raids, devastating fires, and centuries of smuggling. Our guides make it all come alive with vivid tales of bravery, intrigue, and the occasional murder or ghostly encounter!

Wonder why it’s called Conduit Hill or how Watchbell Street got its name? We’ll tell you — and we promise you’ll never forget Turkey Cock Lane once you’ve heard its story!

From the look‑out points at the top of Rye, you’ll see how the coastline has shifted over the centuries. Believe it or not, ships once unloaded cargo right next to where the Heritage Centre now stands — the sea is now nearly two miles away! What happened? Join us and find out.

Along the way, you’ll encounter Rye’s colourful cast of characters — from royalty to roguesfamous to infamous, and the ordinary people who built the town’s character. One of our guides can even trace his family back to Rye residents of the 1700s. You’ll also see where many writers and artists found inspiration — people like Henry JamesE.F. Benson, and others who called Rye home.

From the Norman Conquest to World War II, from smugglers to Captain Pugwashbrutal murders to the Beatles, Rye’s seen it all — and you’ll hear how locals always managed to get off “Scot free!”

Make the most of your visit — combine your walking tour with one of our Story Of Rye or Rye After Dark Shows at the Heritage Centre.
