About Us

Our Story

Discover the Rye Town Model, a stunning 1:100 scale replica of mid-19th century Rye spanning 15 square meters. Crafted by local enthusiasts starting in 1973 and first shown in 1976, it anchors the immersive “Story of Rye” sound-and-light show, weaving 750 years of history with ghosts, myths, and legends through modern projection mapping.

Who We Are

Rye Heritage Centre is a registered charity (No. 1187978), a Charitable Incorporated Organisation dedicated to keeping alive Rye’s heritage. Formed in early 2020 amid the pandemic, we rescued the centre from closure by Rye Town Council, securing a lease and ownership of the Town Model to ensure its legacy.

We reopened in July 2021 with Culture Recovery Fund support and local donations, adapting to post-pandemic visitor shifts and Brexit impacts.

Our Beginnings

Housed in a historic sail loft on Strand Quay, the Rye Town Model has captivated audiences for over 50 years. Previously complemented by a tourist info centre, gift shop, heritage displays, and vintage penny arcade, the space was revitalised after we took over, focusing on immersive storytelling.

Current Highlights

Now fully re-opened for 2026, we feature special events and themed shows such as “Rye After Dark” and “WWII: Rye’s Story” alongside the classic “Story of Rye.” The Smuggler’s Attic, our interactive walk-through exhibit on local smuggling history with multi-media re-enactments, launched successfully in 2024.

Upgrades to the model include advanced projection tech for dynamic shows in English, French, Spanish, German, and more.

Looking Ahead

We’re modernising the ageing sound-and-light electronics—a key project needing funding; to keep experiences cutting-edge. Expect expanded heritage displays, research initiatives, and volunteer opportunities as we regenerate for future visitors.

Schools & Education

We’re developing tailored education packages for schools and groups, offering interactive workshops on Rye’s smuggling history, medieval life, and heritage preservation to engage young learners and community organisations.
